ABOUT US

We believe that working in local communities through local partners is the best way to transform the lives of these children and their families. For over 31 years, Happy Child has been caring and protecting at-risk children and young people vulnerable to high levels of threat and violence.  

 

Our Founder Sarah de Carvalho established Happy Child International in 1993 after hearing about the Candelaria massacre in downtown Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which made worldwide news. 

 

It highlighted the plight of 50 vulnerable street-connected children who became the target of death squads. 

 

That was just the beginning of our tireless work to provide care and refuge for children and young people, whose lives were in great danger.  It’s our passion to protect, care for and provide new opportunities to some of the world’s most neglected and marginalised children and young people.
