Sport transforms lives! When a passion for football helps bring new opportunities

In world cup year, football returns to the TV screens, the streets and to conversations around the world. Children wear their football team shirts and imitate their favourite players, dreaming of taking part in the big spectacle.

But for some children and young people in a socially vulnerable situation, sport represents something even more than entertainment. It represents opportunity for security, belonging and hope for the future.

At Instituto Solidare young people between the ages of 12-14 years have formed a football team of girls and boys demonstrating that sport can also be an instrument of inclusion and integral development. These activities are part of the work achieved through the after-school programme, offered to children and young people in a welcoming and secure environment monitored by teachers.

UNICEF state that sport is an important tool for inclusion, security, and development of children and young people. It strengthens self-esteem, community living and life skills.

The statute for children and adolescents (ECA) recognises sport and leisure as fundamental rights for children and adolescents. Article 4 highlights that it is the duty of society and the public authority to ensure absolute priority be given to the rights related to sport, leisure and community living.

Sport as a safe space

In areas of social inequality violence is often due to a lack of opportunity.  Free time after school can pose potential risks. In this context sport can be used as a safe space.

Participating in the activities at Instituto Solidare, children and young people find:

Sport reduces idle time wasting and creates environments that provide care and emotional protection.

The World Cup inspires

During the world cup millions of children believe thy can go far. But dreams need an opportunity to grow. More than making athletes, we want to help grow citizens prepared to face struggles and form new paths for their lives.
