Flooding in Recife!

A difficult situation is facing many families in the communities we support in the Metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.
Due to the heavy rains that have been affecting the area since the beginning of May 2026. The intensification of rainfall, combined with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), has resulted in floods, severe inundations, landslides, and the forced displacement of hundreds of families in situations of high social vulnerability.
Communities deeply impacted
In the neighbourhoods where Instituto Solidare works, the impacts have been especially critical. Many families have lost essential belongings, such as furniture, appliances, clothing, and food. Several homes have been flooded or present structural risks, making a safe return impossible. There is also a worsening of sanitation issues, with mud accumulation, water contamination, and an increased risk of disease, especially affecting children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing health conditions. To date, we estimate that approximately 600 families assisted by the Instituto Solidare Project have been directly affected.
